Book Excerpts

At the core of Empowering Children to Help Stop Bullying at School is a chapter book on bullying. Avery, the main character, is bullied for years by some schoolmates while others silently watch. An adult teaches Avery a variety of ways he can assertively stick up for himself and gives him opportunities to practice each of these techniques. Gradually over time, Avery learns how to assert himself. Some students who joined in on the bullying or had silently watched Avery being bullied end up helping him instead.

The story, corresponding activities, and readings illustrate

  1. how all students can assertively respond when treated with disrespect and
  2. ways to stop supporting children who bully and help stop bullying instead.

The following are excerpts from five sections of the book.

  • What is Bullying?
  • Respect & Disrespect
